300hr Module: Iyengar Yoga and The Art of Inquiry with Carrie Owerko
This five-day immersion (advanced training) for teachers and serious students will be an in-depth, yet playful experience in the rich, creative, and varied tradition that is Iyengar yoga. We will unpack, explore, and experiment with some of the main principles and practices of Iyengar yoga and beyond. The intention of this immersion is to re-ignite and inspire the learner within.
A strong emphasis will be placed on the what, the how, and the why of practice. Through this analysis we will learn to ask better questions, the types of questions that help bring about a deeper and more meaningful inquiry. Learning through a process of inquiry helps to keep us open, curious, and continuously growing and evolving in our practice, our art, and our teaching.
Each day's thematic exploration will include a variety of postures, functional movement explorations, and postural modifications as well as alternative practices for those with injuries or physical conditions. The practice will be comprehensive and include basic pranayama and a joyful excavation of some of the major principles of yoga philosophy.
The Art of Practice // Deliberate and Playful:
We will look at these different types of practice and how they can be utilized and integrated. Practice is a playground, laboratory, and refuge for a teacher. It is essential to keep one’s practice ever evolving, fresh, and nurturing.
Some Great Guiding Principles for Practice:
A practice that is guided by principles can transcend individual tradition and preferences and be a fertile soil for experimentation and application in various spheres. For both the teacher and the practitioner it is an indispensable tool for problem discovery, problem solving, and the capacity to adapt to the present moment circumstances.
The Art of Possibility:
Many students and teachers will recognize that at times they are their own worst enemy. We will plumb the art of possibility by exploring our language, as well as our approach to problem solving or problem discovery. There are so many ways to make what seems impossible possible by thinking outside of the box, being creative, and cultivating a more fluid growth oriented mindset rather than a fixed and limiting mindset. This means we will have to give ourselves both space and permission to make mistakes, fail even, and by doing so learn the art of "how can I, or how might we?" as opposed to "can I, or can't I?"
Fun with Props:
Props are fun! We will play with props and discover some of the many ways they make the impossible possible, and what is too easy more challenging and rewarding.
Alignment // Form, Fun and Function:
We will look at what we mean by the word "alignment" and how best to live this concept. We will utilize some principles of basic biomechanics and movement analysis to help us live this question.
Analysis, Synthesis and Finding Meaning:
Throughout the immersion we will be alternately analyzing, synthesizing, and finding meaning in what we are doing. The emphasis here will be not only be on the what and the how, but most importantly on the WHY. We will return to the question of why over and over, and learn to love and live this question as it is at the heart of “Iyengar Yoga and the Art of Inquiry.”
